Giving the poor a hand up with solar

In many parts of Africa about 3/4 of the population lives without electricity; with many relying on kerosene for lighting; wood fuels; charcoal for cooking and heating. Many import expensive traditional fuels for electrification. Fortunately today the efficiency of solar panels has increased; and their production cost is down to levels that are becoming competitive with traditional sources of fuels. Even though solar works during sun hours, it can provide peak power—when energy demand is high.

Sending more billions in aid will not in-itself solve the aforementioned problems. The best way to work out these issues is to address the root cause—electrification—by deploying renewable and sustainable sources of energy such as solar. Solar energy would have no price fluctuations once in service; there would be fewer wars, rolling blackouts, better education and health conditions. Think of the jobs it will create lifting many out of poverty.
